Tasked with building an aggregation-based pavilion, we set out to design a component whose assembly would explore the space between part and whole. Where one might find typical distinctions between figure and field, we mirror, scale, or shift parts in space to challenge initial impressions of boundary, continuity, and depth.
Using a thermoforming jig, we fabricated 3 scales of self-similar polystyrene geometries. Connected discretely along their edges, these components create a coherent mass that generates recognizeable--but changing--figures at each view orientation.
